A maternity photoshoot is one of those things that sounds simple… until you actually start planning it.
What do I wear?
When should I schedule it?
Do I need to have everything perfectly put together?
As a mom of two, I can tell you it doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. The best maternity photoshoots are the ones that feel relaxed, comfortable, and true to this season you’re in.
If you’re planning a maternity photoshoot in Minnesota, here’s what I always walk my clients through, especially when it comes to choosing a maternity photoshoot dress and keeping everything feeling natural.
Choosing a Maternity Photoshoot Dress
This is usually the first question I get, and honestly, it matters more than people think.
Your maternity photoshoot dress or maternity outfit really sets the tone for the entire session.
I always recommend:
- something flowy or something tight to the body
- something you can move comfortably in
- soft, neutral tones
Creams, taupes, soft blues, and light pastels all photograph really beautifully, especially with the kind of natural, warm editing I lean into.
Long dresses tend to work best because they add a little movement without feeling like you’re trying too hard.
And if you’re stuck between a few options, go with the one that feels the most like you. You don’t want to feel dressed up as someone else.
When to Schedule Your Maternity Photoshoot
Most maternity photoshoots happen somewhere around 28 to 34 weeks, and that’s usually what I recommend.
Your bump is showing, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around and actually enjoy it.
Here in Minnesota, I also like to think about the season a little:
- Summer and fall are great for outdoor sessions with that soft evening light
- Winter sessions can be really cozy at home
- Spring can be beautiful, just a little unpredictable
There’s no perfect time, but there is a window where it just feels easier, and that’s what we aim for.
What a Maternity Photoshoot Actually Feels Like
I think a lot of people worry about this part.
You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to “be good in photos.”
My job is to guide you in a way that feels really natural, not forced.
That might look like:
- walking together and talking
- holding your bump without overthinking it
- including your partner or kids in a relaxed way
Some of my favorite images are the in-between moments, when you’re not thinking about the camera at all.
In Home or Outdoor Maternity Photoshoot
Both are beautiful, it just depends on what you’re drawn to.
Outdoor maternity photoshoots around Minnesota are perfect if you love:
- open space
- golden hour light
- a little movement and variety
In home sessions are great if you want something more:
- quiet
- cozy
- personal to your everyday life
Neither is better than the other. It just comes down to what feels most comfortable for you.
Keeping Your Maternity Photoshoot Simple
You really don’t need much.
A good maternity photoshoot dress, a location that feels right, and a relaxed mindset go a long way.
This season is already meaningful on its own. The photos don’t need to be overdone to reflect that.
If you’re planning a maternity photoshoot in Minnesota and want something that feels natural and easy, I’m always happy to help you figure out what that could look like 🤍
